Why They Look Different

Why Our Electric Bicycles Look Like Scooter Mopeds

If you are used to browsing e-bike catalogues, our line-up will look unfamiliar. Wide saddles, protective bodywork, front fairings — the proportions of a classic step-through moped rather than a thin-framed bicycle. That is deliberate, and it is the reason these models exist.

By integrating a chain-driven pedal system into a lightweight scooter frame, these models meet the technical definition of a bicycle in most major markets — US Class 2 (750 W max, 20 mph assist cut-off, throttle permitted) or UK/EU EPAC (250 W, 25 km/h, pedal-assist). The commercial consequence is significant: your customers ride without a driver's licence, registration, number plate or mandatory insurance.

The pedals are functional, not decorative. Because the frame is narrower and lighter than a full scooter, the vehicle can be pedalled manually at reasonable effort. In throttle-permitted markets riders can use the pedals as little as they like; where local law requires pedal-assist, the cadence sensor engages the motor as soon as the pedals turn — this is what keeps the vehicle classified as a bicycle rather than a moped.

Need higher speeds, larger cargo capacity or classic Vespa-style bodywork? Those sit in our electric scooter category, and we can custom-retrofit pedal systems onto those larger frames for markets with e-bike regulations.

Electric Bicycle Product Lineup

Six production models across two core body styles — minimalist step-through commuters and full-fairing scooter-style e-bikes. All configured with functional pedals to your target market's e-bike regulations.

The Core Advantage

The Look of a Moped, the Legal Status of a Bicycle

Your customers get scooter-style comfort and bodywork — without motorcycle licensing, vehicle registration, license plates or mandatory insurance. The difference is legal, not visual.

Regulatory Compliance

Configured to Your Market's E-Bike Regulations

The same words — pedals, power, speed — mean different legal things in different markets. BENLG builds to your target framework. Note that the EU’s L1e-A “powered cycle” category is closer to the original meaning of a moped than to a conventional electric bicycle, and may carry registration and insurance obligations in some member states.

Engineering Deep Dive

The Pedal System: Legal Trigger, Engineered Two Ways

On a moped-style e-bike the pedals define the legal category. How the motor responds to them is an engineering choice that changes the riding experience.

Electric bicycle pedal drivetrain with crank, chain and cadence sensor

Cadence Sensor

Detects whether pedals are turning; motor assists while they rotate — minimal rider effort, the standard for comfortable scooter-style riding.

Torque Sensor

Measures pedal force and delivers proportional assistance — a natural bicycle-like ride, preferred by riders who actively pedal.

Walk-Assist Mode (6 km/h)

Powered slow-speed assistance for walking the bike — permitted in EU/UK and adds practical value for maneuvering.

Genuinely Rideable on Most Models

Most BENLG moped-style e-bikes — our minimalist step-through and full-fairing models — use optimized body widths, so the functional pedals can genuinely propel the bike in normal riding.

Honest engineering note: Pedaling comfort depends on frame width and geometry, not simply on whether pedals exist. Most BENLG e-bikes are narrow enough to pedal comfortably in daily use. On full-width models the size of a full-size scooter — such as the DT12 — active pedaling over distance is physically awkward, so the pedals primarily secure bicycle classification. Choose the platform that matches how your customers actually ride.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a moped-style electric bike, and why do BENLG e-bikes look like scooters?
A moped-style e-bike is an electric bicycle designed to resemble a moped or scooter while remaining legally classified as an e-bike. BENLG models integrate fully functional, chain-driven pedals onto step-through or full-fairing scooter frames. This means your customers get the comfort, weather protection and styling of a moped with the legal status of a bicycle — no motorcycle license, no registration and no mandatory insurance in most markets.
What moped-style body types does BENLG offer?
BENLG builds four distinct body types: (1) Underbone / Moped-Inspired — the ANTEL, available on request; (2) Minimalist Step-Through — Tiger, MODERN, KUJUN and MINI LONG; (3) Full-Fairing Scooter Style — ROBIN S and ROBIN D; (4) Wide-Body / Full-Size Moped Style — the DT12, available on request. Each style targets different customer aesthetics and use cases while staying within e-bike power and speed regulations.
Do customers need a license, registration or insurance to ride these?
In most markets, no. When configured to EPAC (EU), EAPC (UK), US Class 1/2/3 or China GB 17761 standards, these are legally classified as electric bicycles and typically do not require a motorcycle license, vehicle registration, license plates or mandatory insurance. However, the EU's L1e-A "powered cycle" category (up to 1,000W) may require type approval, registration and insurance in some member states. Always verify the specific rules in your target country and state before ordering.
What is the difference between cadence and torque pedal sensors?
A cadence sensor detects whether the pedals are turning and provides motor assistance while they rotate — the rider can pedal with minimal effort (sometimes called "ghost pedaling"). This is the standard for comfortable scooter-style riding. A torque sensor measures how hard the rider pushes on the pedals and delivers proportional assistance, creating a more natural bicycle-like feel. Torque sensors cost more and are preferred on narrow frames designed for real pedaling. BENLG can configure either sensor type to match your market and customer profile.
How do you configure e-bikes for US Class 1/2/3, EU EPAC and UK EAPC rules?
Before shipment, BENLG pre-configures the controller firmware, motor power output, speed cut-off limiter and pedal-assist behavior to match your target framework. For the US: Class 1 (pedal-assist only, 32 km/h), Class 2 (pedal-assist + throttle, 32 km/h) or Class 3 (pedal-assist, 45 km/h), all up to 750W. For EU EPAC and UK EAPC: 250W, 25 km/h, pedal-assist required, walk-assist only up to 6 km/h. For China GB 17761: up to 400W, 25 km/h, throttle permitted. Tell us your target country and we recommend the compliant specification.
Can the pedals really propel the bike, or are they only for legal compliance?
It depends on the model. Most BENLG e-bikes — including all four minimalist step-through models (Tiger, MODERN, KUJUN, MINI LONG) and the full-fairing ROBIN S/D — use optimized body widths that make the functional pedals genuinely usable for normal riding. On full-width models the size of a full-size scooter, such as the DT12, active pedaling over distance is physically awkward due to the wide frame and crank geometry, so the pedals primarily serve to secure bicycle legal classification. We recommend matching the platform to how your customers actually ride.
Lead-acid vs. lithium — which should I order for my market?
Choose based on your market's price sensitivity and use case. Lead-acid is lower upfront cost, heavier (which affects pedaling effort), and offers 300–500 charge cycles — ideal for budget-sensitive commuter markets and short-range use. Lithium-ion (including LiFePO4) is lighter (easier to pedal and maneuver), offers 1,000–2,000+ cycles with smart BMS, longer range per charge, and is available with UN38.3 / IEC 62133 certification and UL 2849 support for the US market — ideal for delivery fleets, long-range commuters and premium positioning. Both are available across all BENLG e-bike models.
What certification documents can BENLG provide (UL 2849, EN 15194)?
BENLG holds ISO9001 quality certification. For e-bike market access, we provide technical construction files, test samples and coordination for UL 2849 (US battery and electrical-system safety) and EN 15194 (EU EPAC product safety) testing. Lithium battery packs are available with UN38.3 and IEC 62133 test reports for transport and safety. Availability of full type-approval certificates varies by model and final specification — please confirm documentation for your exact configuration and target market before placing an order.
What is the MOQ, and how many units fit a 40HQ (CBU/SKD/CKD)?
Standard wholesale MOQ is from 1 × 40HQ, with OEM branding available from one container. Samples are available before bulk commitment. For container loading, figures for full-size e-bikes the size of the DT12 are approximately: CBU (fully assembled) ~50 units, SKD (semi-knocked down) ~75 units, CKD (completely knocked down) ~150 units per 40HQ. Minimalist step-through models load in far higher quantities thanks to their smaller dimensions — approximately 300–350 units CKD, or 160–250 units SKD (carton-packed). Confirm the exact count for your chosen model and configuration at the quote stage.
Can I customize motor power, speed limiters and branding (OEM/ODM)?
Yes. BENLG offers full OEM/ODM customization: branding (logo, decals, colors, packaging), motor power (250W / 400W / 750W configurable), speed limiters (locked to your market's legal ceiling), pedal-assist sensor type (cadence or torque), battery chemistry (lead-acid or lithium), and accessories (baskets, racks, top boxes, lights). White-label branding is available from one container. Full ODM body development — including wide-body and custom styles — is available with tooling on request. Standard production lead time is 6–8 weeks; OEM/custom timelines vary by depth.
What warranty and payment terms do you offer?
Core components carry a 2-year warranty on the motor, lithium battery and frame (including rear swingarm and steering column); 1 year on the controller, charger and lead-acid battery; 6 months on shock absorbers, brake systems, meters and other electrical parts; and 3–6 months on tyres. Warranty covers manufacturing defects from the date of manufacture and excludes consumables, unauthorized modification and damage from misuse. Payment is 30% T/T deposit on order confirmation with the balance against the B/L copy; L/C is available with a 30% deposit upfront. First orders include a 1% free spare-parts allowance.
